Our Team

All our music therapists are Board Certified which requires:
1. Bachelor’s degree in Music Therapy
2. 1200 supervised clinical hours of client hours
3. Taking and passing the Board Exam
4. Maintaining the certification by receiving 100 educational training hours every 5 year cycle
5. Maintaining Utah State Certification

Heather T. Overly, SCMT, MT-BC, has been practicing music therapy for over 20 years. She earned her BS in Music Therapy from Utah State University in 2001 and has been Board Certified since graduation. Heather completed her 6-month internship at Sunshine Terrace under the direction of Jennifer Birchell. As the owner of Overlymusical LLC, she serves a wide range of clients, including adults in addiction recovery, teens with mental health challenges, older adults in retirement communities, hospice patients, and individuals with neurodiverse abilities. Heather also offers music development classes for parents and children ages 0–5, as well as group guitar classes for teens and adults. Passionate about the healing power of music, Heather lives in Cache Valley with her husband, Devin, where they have raised four wonderful children.
Taylor Niebergall, SCMT, MT-BC -Taylor Graduated from USU with a BS in Music Therapy in 2018 and completed an internship at the Hartvigsen school for disabled children in 2019. She has a deep love and appreciation for music and for people. Taylor plays the guitar, piano, and flute, but her favorite instrument is her voice. She is very excited to start working again while continuing to help her husband raise their two young sons.
Mami Matsumoto Lyon, SCMT, MT-BC Mami received her BS in Music Therapy at Utah State University in 2011 and completed an internship at Sunshine Terrace in Logan. She served various clients as a music therapist at Terrace Grove Assisted Living in Logan and Fogerty Music Therapy in Bloomington, Indiana. She loves teaching music and shares her love of music. She sings, plays the violin, guitar, and piano. She has a husband and is a mother of two sons. She enjoys Zumba, gardening, and cooking.

Kienna Parkin-Choi, SCMT, MT-BC
Kienna received her BS degrees in Music Therapy and Psychology in 2022 from Utah State University. She completed an internship at Blue Ridge Hospice in Virginia and received her credential shortly after. Kienna’s main instrument is guitar but she started learning the violin at 5 years old and was encouraged to pursue music by her music teacher mother. She’s excited to continue to work with hospice patients through Overlymusical, LLC, in the Salt Lake area where she lives with her husband. Kienna also loves practicing Taekwondo, learning Korean, and embroidering.
Abby Maughan-Cheney, SCMT, MT-BC
Abby completed her internship with OverlyMusical in July of 2023 and is happy to be back on the team! She grew up in Cache Valley and graduated from USU in 2022 with a BS in music therapy and a psychology minor. She grew up playing the piano, and loves singing and playing the guitar. She truly believes in music’s ability to connect, heal, and support people of all ages and circumstances. She is married with one beautiful daughter, and loves watching movies and spending time outside.
Rheannon Longhurst, MT-BC.
Rheannon is so happy to be a part of the Overly Musical team! She finished her internship with Overlymusical in Jan 2024 and immediately was hired on. Her main instrument is voice and she loves singing loud for all to hear! Rheannon grew up in Salt Lake and now lives in Cache Valley with her family. When she’s not singing or playing an instrument, you can usually find her reading a good book or chasing her toddler.
Sadie Carlson is a native of Virginia who attended Utah State University to pursue a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Music Therapy. She finished her internship at Overlymusical, LLC April 2025. Sadie loves to read new books, sketch and paint, learning to play new instruments and explore the outdoors (when it’s not super cold).
Aspen Barry, MT-BC has loved music ever since she was a kid. Aspen graduated from Utah State in 2025 and completed her internship with Overlymusical in November. She also loves being outside and hiking or paddle-boarding with her husband, and she also loves knitting or watercoloring. =) She is so excited to be working with Overlymusical Music Therapy!
Reina Brough, SCMT, MT-BCReina learned about music therapy when she was 14 years old and started learning the guitar right away! Reina graduated from Utah State with a Bachelor of Science in Music Therapy in May of 2025. In January of 2026, Reina completed her 6 month internship at Huntsman Cancer Institute in Salt Lake City. Reina’s principal instrument she studied during her degree is the Viola and she loves incorporating it and classical music into her practice. Reina loves working with clients of all ages and in many different settings. When Reina isn’t playing music, she loves to mountain bike, fly fish, hike, camp, ski, or do anything outdoors with her husband and family.
Music Therapy Interns
Music Therapy interns are with Overlymusical, LLC for 6 months then they are qualified to sit for the Board Certification Exam. In order to qualify to be an intern, students must have a Bachelors of Music Therapy from a certified University.
Emma graduated from Utah State University in 2025 with her dual music majors of Music Therapy BS and Harp Performance BA. Ever since she was starting to learn the harp as a 4 year old, Emma knew she would be playing music for the rest of her life. Emma is thrilled to begin her internship with OverlyMusical in November of 2025. Outside of her music life, Emma loves being in the sunshine, cooking, and spending time with family.
Erik is pursuing a second career in music therapy following a distinguished 20-year career as a trumpet player with U.S. Army Bands. He earned a Bachelor of Music in Trumpet Performance from Brigham Young University and a Master of Music in Jazz Studies from the University of North Texas. He recently completed his music therapy coursework through the online distance program at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College. Erik enjoys hiking and spending time with his family.
